After a decade with Über Content, which he co-ran with partner Phyllis Koenig, Lee said that the timing was right to launch his own shop. “I’ve had a fantastic 10-year run with Über but the business is evolving and I’ve had a vision for the type and culture of production company that I’ve wanted to build for a long time.” Lee said. “Sanctuary is that company. SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- The father of a film worker killed by a train during shooting of a movie about singer Gregg Allman said Tuesday that granting the film's director early release from a two-year jail sentence for involuntary manslaughter would send a message "that Hollywood gets a break." Former "Midnight Rider" director Randall Miller has asked a Georgia judge to set him free less than a year after he pleaded guilty to felony charges in the February 2014 train collision. A 27-year-old camera assistant, Sarah... more...Review: Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson's "Anomalisa" By Lindsey Bahr, Film Writer
In "Anomalisa" everyone looks and sounds the same. They have the same face (Caucasian, bland, non-descript). They have the same voice (Tom Noonan's). They bore our protagonist Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) to death. And this feeling that he's the only individual on the planet among all these clones might be the cause of his unravelling. In this very R-rated stop-motion animated feature, scripted by Charlie Kaufman (writer of "Adaptation." and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind")... more...Review: Michael Moore's "Where to Invade Next" By Jocelyn Novek, National Writer
Of course Michael Moore exaggerates. Of course he engages in cheerful, unabashed cherry-picking. Of course he sees black and white where most of us see shades of gray. That doesn't necessarily mean he's wrong. It just means he's being Michael Moore - and in his latest documentary, "Where to Invade Next," it's a more impishly entertaining Moore than usual, using comedy and even a bit of fantasy to prove his point. Which is, basically, that Europe has some ideas on how to run a society that... more...Influential Publicist Murray Weissman Dies At 90
STUDIO CITY, Calif. -- Murray Weissman--legendary Hollywood publicist and awards specialist who worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg, and who had a helping hand in clients winning seven Best Picture Oscars, countless Emmys and Golden Globes--died today of pancreatic cancer in his Studio City apartment with his family by his side. He was 90. In a nearly 70-year career, Weissman began as a publicity executive with the ABC and CBS television networks where he worked... more... Domestic Box Office Reaches A Record High $11B In 2015
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It's been a record-breaking, $11 billion year at the movies. Box-office tracker Rentrak said Tuesday that the industry has already reached the benchmark and is expected to end the year with an unprecedented $11.1 billion in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada. The previous record of $10.9 billion was set in 2013. This year heralded numerous record-breaking releases, including "Fifty Shades of Grey," which set a record for February opening-weekend attendance, and "Furious 7" did the same in... more... Better Theater Experiences, Social Media Help Realize $11B Year By Lindsey Bahr, Film Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It takes more than "Star Wars" to make an $11 billion year. Disney and J.J. Abrams pushed 2015 over the mark days before its conclusion, but many factors helped make the year the biggest of all time - including social media and better theatrical experiences - which helped draw audiences away from their home entertainment centers and into the multiplex. In 2014, "The Interview" was released in theaters and online at the same time, and this year saw streaming service Netflix enter theatrical... more..."Jurassic World," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Top Box Office For 2015

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has reached $1 billion at the box office, reaching the milestone with record-setting hyper speed. The Walt Disney Co. said "The Force Awakens" crossed the billion-dollar mark Sunday, accomplishing the feat in just 12 days. The previous movie to reach $1 billion the fastest was Universal's "Jurassic World," which did it in 13 days in June. "Jurassic World" also had the benefit of record grosses in China. "The Force Awakens" doesn't open in the world's second-... more...Xmas Week Nielsens Topped By Football, Reruns By Frazier Moore, Television Writer
NEW YORK (AP) -- Football and reruns prevailed on television Christmas week, according to the Nielsen ratings company. NBC’s Sunday night clash between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings claimed the lead with almost 18 million viewers. But CBS was not to be outdone with its slate of encore dramas and comedies (a trio of repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” made it into the Top 20), along with such popular holiday fare as an Andy Griffith special and a colorized hour of classic “I Love Lucy.” For the week... more...Branding Grows From Legalized Weed By Kristen Wyatt

As the fast-growing marijuana industry emerges from the black market and starts looking like a mainstream industry, there's a scramble to brand and trademark pot products. The celebrity endorsements are just the latest attempt to add cachet to a line of weed. Snoop Dogg calls his eight strains of weed "Dank From the Doggfather Himself." The case sets the stage for perhaps the biggest Hollywood celebrity trial of the mobile-all-the-time era and could send the 78-year-old Cosby to prison in the twilight of his life and barrier-breaking career. Prosecutors accused him of plying former... more...Top Spot of the Week: Ogilvy Takes Us to "Driver Training Camp" For UPS
