DGA Report: TV Directing Opportunities Lacking For Women, Minorities
By Lynn Elber, Television Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Women and minorities are largely shut out of the ranks of TV series directors in a stubbornly unchanged pattern of hiring, according to a Hollywood guild study released Wednesday. The Directors Guild of America report said that employers have made no significant improvement in diversity among TV directors in the last four years. White males directed the vast majority of the more than 3,500 cable, broadcast and high-budget online episodes made for the 2013-14 season, according to the study. In a... more...

Tesla Deal Sparks Major Reduction in Funding For Film Incentives in Nevada
By Robert Goldrich
CARSON CITY, Nevada -- Funding for Nevada’s film incentives program has been slashed from $80 million to $10 million covering a four-year period which began back in January. Catalyst for the cutback was legislation signed last week by Gov. Brian Sandoval which provides Tesla Motors with well over $1 billion worth of financial incentives in exchange for the company bringing its battery factory to Nevada. To help offset the cost of the Tesla package, state legislators made other cuts, including $70 million in film... more...

The current film tax credit allows the California Film Commission to allocate up to $100 million of income tax credits a year to limited kinds of productions made in California. A lottery is used to award the... more...

Anheuser-Busch, McDonald's, Visa, Campbell Soup express disapproval but stop short of pulling ads
By Mae Anderson, Business Writer
NEW YORK (AP) -- Major sponsors including Anheuser-Busch are adding to the chorus of disapproval over the National Football League's recent scandals, but the companies are stopping short of pulling advertising. Anheuser-Busch said Tuesday that it has spoken with the NFL about concerns related to recent incidents that are sparking outcry from fans, including an investigation into how long the NFL knew about a video that shows Baltimore Raven Ray Rice beating his then-fiancee; as well as the Minnesota Vikings'... more...

Director Morten Tyldum’s “The Imitation Game” claimed the coveted Grolsch People’s Choice Award on Sunday. Cumberbatch plays World War II British code-breaker Alan Turing. The role is complicated because Cumberbatch not only must convey the mathematical brilliance of Turing, but the pressure he faced as a closeted gay man at a time when homosexuality was criminalized... more...

Alibaba IPO Translates Into Financial Boon For Yahoo
By Michael Liedtke, Technology Writer
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Yahoo is making amends for years of blundering with one smart move: an early investment in China's Alibaba Group that has turned into a multibillion-dollar boon. The latest windfall will be delivered with Alibaba's record-setting IPO completed late Thursday, which is expected raise up to $25 billion for the e-commerce company and its early backers. Alibaba's shares will begin trading for the first time on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. Yahoo is in line to make anywhere from $8.3 billion... more...

A Caveat For Alibaba Investors
By Paul Wiseman & Marcy Gordon, Business Writers
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is about to launch what may prove the biggest initial public stock offering ever. Yet anyone who expects to get rich from buying into China's high-growth story will be betting against history. China's explosive economic rise has delivered virtually nothing to most stock investors. When Chinese companies have listed stocks on American markets, their shares have lost an average 1 percent a year for the next three years, compared with an average 7 percent annual... more...

Microsoft Seeks Mobility Via "Minecraft"
By Mae Anderson & Barbara Ortutay, Technology Writers
NEW YORK (AP) -- Microsoft's decision to spend $2.5 billion for the creator of the hit game "Minecraft" could help the Xbox maker grab attention on mobile phones, a new priority for the company. But the move carries risks, as gamers can be fickle. Although the Lego-like multiplayer game is currently the top paid app for the iPhone and Android devices in the U.S., today's popular hit could be tomorrow's dud. The maker of the much obsessed-over "Candy Crush Saga," for example, rode the game's popularity to go... more...

The video-streaming giant, which has more than 50 million subscribers in 40 countries, this year earmarked $400 million to expand further internationally. It's launching now... more...

"Dolphin Tale 2" finishes in second place
By Sandy Cohen, Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It took a murderous Idris Elba and a pair of dolphin buddies to defeat "Guardians of the Galaxy" at movie theaters. The Sony thriller "No Good Deed," which stars Elba as an escaped convict and Taraji P. Henson as the innocent he terrorizes, opened on top of the box office with $24.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. And Sony wasn't surprised. "It's a movie that we really loved and felt that it was going to win," said Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer. "You have to give it to the... more...

As part of its campaign for Schlage locks introducing “The Keyless Era,” agency Young & Laramore, Indianapolis, has turned out several online videos, including this one in which we meet a character who literally is a “doormat.” He’s lost his purpose in life because the spare house key is no longer hidden underneath him. Schlage’s new keyless electronic locks have made the doormat obsolete when it comes to being the hiding place for keys. Now all people do is walk all over him. John Douglas... more...

Kenny Herzog of O Positive directed this spot in which a man surprises his wife by telling her he’s won the top NY Lotto scratch-off prize of $1 million. She is doubtful of this, and notes his history of never even coming close to “hitting” anything. After checking his ticket, they are delightfully surprised to find that, despite his previous bad luck, the... more...
