Directors Showcase Celebrates Class of 2024

SHOOT’s 22nd Annual New Directors Showcase Reel made its premiere at the SHOOT New Directors Showcase Event at the DGA in NYC on 12/9/24.

The NDS Class of 2024 includes directors from varied backgrounds that include acting, producing, editing, production design, sound design, visual effects, live theater, serving in agency creative and in-house directing capacities, comedy writing for such series as "Saturday Night Live" and "The Goldbergs," on staff at Apple as a video producer, even working in the film commission sector to provide support services to the industry at large.

The Showcase directors’ body of work spans commercials, public service fare, branded content, a feature film, shorts, documentaries, music videos, proof of concept for a TV series, a sports team promo and spec work.

In The Director’s Chair with Dawn Porter Porter recently received the International Documentary Association’s Career Achievement Award, an honor presented annually to an individual film or video maker who, through a body of work, has made a major and lasting contribution to the documentary form. Porter is known for her storytelling on social justice, history, and on cultural icons. Her celebrated documentaries include Gideon’s Army, Trapped, John Lewis: Good Trouble, The Lady Bird Diaries, The Way I See It, Rise Again: Tulsa and The Red Summer, Luther: Never Too Much and Power of the Dream. The latter two debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. 2024 also brought us Porter’s MSNBC series, "The Sing Sing Chronicles". Furthermore, she just earned her third Film Independent Spirit Award nomination for "Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court, a four-part Showtime series". Her prior Spirit Award nods came for the documentary series "Philly D.A. in 2022", and "Gideon’s Army" in 2014. Porter is also exploring short-form fare–including commercials and branded content–by coming aboard the roster of Institute, the production company headed by acclaimed filmmaker Lauren Greenfield. Meet Some Talent from The NDS Class Of 2024 SHOOT publisher and editorial director Roberta Griefer moderated this panel discussion which included three of the 2024 New Directors Showcase helmers: Chris Cole, Thavary Krouch and Shahriar Rahman, all currently unaffiliated with a production company. Offering professional expertise from the advertising production house and agency sides of the business, were Kate Oppenheim, managing partner, m ss ng p eces, and executive VP, Tribeca Studios; and Dave Rolfe, global head of production, WPP/Hogarth. NDS Alumni Discuss the Long and Short of It This session features past NDS directors who share insights into their recent work ranging from a microfilm to feature documentaries that have made their mark on the festival circuit, theatrical and VOD marketplaces. They also discuss industry lessons learned and tips for new directors. The lineup of panelists consisted of: Michael Fiore, producer/director, Fiore Media Group (2016 14th Annual NDS); Rachel Annette Helson, director (2019 17th Annual NDS); Jeffrey Morgan, director, Sandy Hollow Productions (2007 5th Annual NDS); and Romina Schwedler, writer/director (2014 12th Annual NDS). Session was moderated by SHOOT publisher & editorial director Roberta Griefer. [WATCH HERE]

Attaining Content-ment This panel discussion focused on artificial intelligence with a look at an AI feature trailer, and a holiday thank you project in which generative AI was used to make 100,000 unique personalized videos. They were discussed, respectively, by Vico Sharabani, founder and executive creative director, The-Artery, and Ryan Chong, executive VP and head of production at Publicis Groupe’s Le Truc. Rounding out our panel was attorney Jeffrey Greenbaum, managing partner of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein + Selz (FKKS) who delved into legal aspects and implications of an ever-evolving content marketplace.
